Seventh month is the month is Singapore where people remember the dead and give offerings. It is said that on the seventh lunar month, the gates of hell open and the ghosts are free to return and roam the earth. Also known as Zhong Yuan Jie 中元节.
This drawing is dedicated to my neighbour that sadly decided to leave this world at a young age.
I paste my artwork on the wall outside my house But you are not here to share it with me, when you walk down the corridor. Its the seventh month, but i can’t feel any ghosts, only light. I almost died But you actually died In all my years rooftopping i never fell. If it is a matter of luck, we could trade places. Maybe if my artwork had been on the wall sooner, we might have talked and said hello. I don’t understand, in my life i met so many people to help, But i didn’t know you. The Gods gave us different paths, even though we live on the same floor. Standing above a city of lights, I have landed. You have landed as well. Hopefully somewhere better. I will pray for you. This drawing is for us. You’re dead I’m alive. We can look at the lights of the city together From the floor we live on.
One of my favourite drawings, the feeling came across so nicely. It is an incomplete drawing, but i stopped drawing it the minute i saw the face of Death. The artwork is myself and Death looking at souls in the underworld. It is like an old memory of this incarnation of Death looked like. I didnt touch it anymore because i was worried if i coloured in any of the drawing the sharpness of his features and expression and mine would be lost. It is appropriately a winter drawing. A time for cultivation.
How to write this, how to sing this, i don’t even know. The buddhists say life is suffering. Coming through the tunnel of darkness into light is one endless struggle after endless struggle.
Enjoy your time in the underworld and earth. These joys are finite. But nothing prepares you for what happens next when you stumble into the light. The spiritual responsibilities gifted to you by heaven are heavy enough to crush any soul.
What leads to the light is the torture of living and sustaining yourself forever. When the doors to the underworld close to you except by exception because your energy is no longer compatible, you are forced to accept your fate of endless existence.
In this life and the next. Nothing prepares you for the torture of endless existence when your life is over. Thats why its important to enjoy life. Start now. Enjoy your tea, your game of chess.
The endless light flooding your mind that does not go away. Where you walk, there is always light. You can’t even enjoy the darkness like before. Ghosts scatter away from your path when you want to say hello. It makes you sad. All your friends in the underworld miss you because you cannot go back. In dreams buy their food and clothes in the marketplace. Even if it is a fleeting dream if you are lucky.
Its coming for you as it came for me. The light. I wish you peace in your endless existence that is coming your way. That you have the strength, presence of mind, perserverence and calm to let the tides wash over you for eternity. Since only God can bless you, may God bless you abundantly and forge the path ahead for us. From a former soul who enjoyed the grey mists and the places in the underworld.
Dark shadows rising, Dark shadows falling As we pass through winter The light heats through the dark Of heavenly pain All beings experience the weather And it changes The leaves on the tree Some seeds begin to flower And birds fly away Never to be seen across The eastern sky again.
I have been super busy over Chinese New Year. I hope you are all well, no matter which part of the world you are in. We all deserve to start the year well and i am sending you love and good wishes.
This is a painting of the process of energy moving up from the body. Particularly the blue line of energy from the base of the spine. The soul energy could be reflective of the inward projection of the soul or one’s ancestors coming to be present. The lines of energy move very fast.
The time stamp on this artwork said this was done in Spring. That could perhaps account for the light, and airy nature of the energy coming forth in this painting. Probably threads of which i wish to continue exploring.
I hope you are all well, and taking it easy during this busy time of celebration. I hope for all who are nof celebrating Chinese New Year that your year is starting out great. If it is not, breathe and relax into the new year. That is what i am telling myself !
I painted this silk fan as a gift for my teacher. I was so happy she liked it. It is the first silk fan i painted so i was pretty nervous. The fan is painted with acrylic paint. Please do not try to use Chinese inks as the ink will bleed all over the fan !
The design is winterblossoms, and some are open and some are budding. The petals are also floating in the wind. It is stamped winter at the top, with my name at the side. I was aiming for something contemplative, and dreamy. I think it is both. The kind of artwork you look at when relaxing, and drinking tea. Pondering the fragrant, but fleeting nature of life.
Happy Chinese New Year Everyone ! Wishing you all good health, happiness and prosperity this Lunar New Year of the rabbit.
For all who are not celebrating Chinese New Year I wish you a most blessed year.
This is the artwork i have chosen to share with you this Chinese New Year.
It is the first paper fan i ever painted with Chinese inks. It is a self portrait with mountains and a weeping willow tree. The words read xia yue, ning jing. Meaning quietness is summer time. The stamp has my name and the second stamp like an oval says pu ti. Which means Bodhi in Chinese. Wherever it is the season or has a feeling i use the appropriate stamp.
I think I painted this fan to have one to sit and drink tea in the park, and just fan. Because it is so hot sometimes, i am pretty sure this was why i painted it in summer.
It is the first fan, so i am very much learning to improve. I carry it to remind myself if i try, i can learn something new.
It is very delicate, being paper so it will not withstand the rain so i am careful with it.
Chinese New Year is just round the corner for all who are celebrating. This is the year of the rabbit and i wish all celebrating a happy, healthy and successful year of the rabbit.
I am breaking transmission of what i was going to post to share some Chinese inspired and Chinese themed work with you in celebration of the season.
This is one of my beloved sketches that i kept hidden away in my sketching journal. It is a self portrait in olden times, daydreaming. Some of my best and most important days in my life have been when i have been daydreaming. So this is how it feels in my mind and soul.
